Two generations of my family have worked at Henry Smith, and I have spent pretty much all of my working life here (34 years)! I started off as an apprentice draughtsman and I’ve worked in various roles, both on and off site, which have helped me in my current role of liaising between our clients, architects and engineers to make sure the drawing office have all the relevant information they need. It means I have a thorough knowledge of steelwork and building construction, which helps our clients get their projects completed in the way that they want.

In office hours I work in administration and assist in the buying of steel and supplies for our projects; outside of the office I still can’t escape as I’m studying a part-time degree in business management, which the company sponsor. Every company needs a financial expert, and I’ve been Henry Smith’s for the last 6 years. I know people think that accounting isn’t interesting, but I like to think of it differently; just like we like to think of steel differently. And when I’m not in the office, I’m out playing golf, skiing or watching football, so who said accountants were dull?

You’ll often find me out on-site, with clients and ensuring the pre-planning goes smoothly as well as directing all daily activities so that our clients are happy and updated on their job. I started off in steel erection at Henry Smith 31 years ago, and then worked on sites for many years, returning 7 years ago. In fact, Henry Smith runs in the family – three generations have worked here – my father, myself and now my two children! It must be something in the steel…

I spend my days (and often longer!) planning and supervising our on-site works to ensure we deliver on time and within budget. If you need method statements or risk assessments, then I can help. I’ve worked in construction as long as I can remember – 30 years. Starting off as an apprentice plumber, I moved on to groundworks construction, which means I understand our projects literally from the bottom up. Although I’ve worked directly here for 5 years, I first started working with Henry Smith as a sub-contracted steel erector 22 years ago.

After serving my 4 year apprenticeship as a plater welder, I moved into Auto Cad 26 years ago. Having been at Henry Smith for the last 13 years, I now use the experience that I gained in Auto CAD for my role in steel detailing using Stru Cad. I work with the drawing office team to make sure that our clients get the quality detailing that they expect.
